We Are Us

There are two common interests my dad and I share: music and books.

There are two things my dad and I almost always disagree on: music and books.

It's sad, really.

I mean, we agree on common stuff, like the Beatles. And the Bible. That's about where our tastes diverge.

We're both on an unofficial mission to convert each other to the "right" side now. I recommend books to him. He makes me listen to his music. Sometimes something sticks, and sometimes it doesn't.

This isn't a bad thing, though. We have lively discussions. Chairs are thrown! Decorative pillows are ripped! Windows beg for mercy!

Okay, no. But, we do enjoy the lively discussions.

I was thinking about this in relation to writing. I would love to be the next amazing whoever, but the only thing I can be is myself. I'm the only one who can write like me and that's so awesome.

Regina Spektor doesn't sing like Colbie Caillat. If she did, people would probably rip decorative pillows, because come on, that would sound weird. They're totally different.

So, yo, Regina (or, you know, insert your name here), KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. Because when you make your voice do that weird cool thing like only you can do, we know can write that character with a funny little quirk. Or the plotline that some people might think is too out there, but that we can pull off.

Because WE ARE US, dang it!*

*eloquent bits of wisdom brought to you by Jeigh. Keep being yourself.

I laughed so hard at the Beatles and the Bible. Haha. At least you have the essentials in common. And I like how you related it to Regina's vocal antics. :)

You know whats funny is thats exactly how my dad and I are. He loves books and music but I swear we could live on different planets. He loves non-fiction more then anythings and I love fiction more then anything. And music....well I don't even know where to begin....haha :)

A healthy relationship often centers around conflicting discourse.

We are us! You are you. I am me. Sometimes I don't like being me, though. Especially when I have to clean up puke or fish poop out of the bathtub. But as a writer, I'll take me.

This post, which was awesome to begin with, was made even better by the Regina reference. :D

My dad and I don't agree on a lot of music and books either, LOL.

Haha! I can totally picture you and Dad ripping pillows over books. =) Nice post...the same thing goes for pretty much all of life, doesn't it?

Sometimes, a reminder is nice :-)

I was actually just thinking of this the other day! As you know, I just got done reading The Hunger Games and am now reading The Death Cure. I realized as I was reading The Death Cure that the voice in my head sounded different than when I was reading The Hunger Games. It's because of the different voices that each of these writers have.
Also, Michael and I have this same problem. Well, we like the same type of music but as far as books...forget about it.

For my dad and I on music: Everything I listen to is narcotic rock (including Lifehouse, Glee, Owl City), everything he listens to makes cringe.
Books: I love them, he thinks they're a waste of time, but just above TV and the internet. Although he hopes they will bring me fame and fortune.

And I love the bit of wisdom you gave. We really all need to embrace our own voices. :)

Oh yeah, my dad and I are total opposites music-wise. Ever seen the Christopher Guest mockumentary "A Mighty Wind"? That's my dad. I'm more of a metal/leather kind of gal...we agree to disagree. :)

I loved this entry! Thanks for the confidence-boosting wisdom... and giving me the sudden desire to rip some decorative pillows. ;-)

Hi, I just dropped by to say hi. Your blog was promoted over at the pay it forward blogfest. I did not have a chance to visit as many as I would have liked to on Friday. It is nice to meet you & I will be back to read more

I think this keeps me going more than anything. I am the only person who can write my story in my own way. So instead of longing to be like anyone else, I should just strive to be the best darn ME that I can be! And maybe someday other people will think the way I write is cool. That would be awesome.
